Trailer Trash: Paranormal Activity 3

NOTE: This is a weekly post idea I’m thinking of trying out. If people like it, I’ll turn it into a Haywire Effect-style vlog talking about upcoming movies, so feel free to comment.

The Paranormal Activity series is a polarizing one for a simple reason: If you don’t believe in the paranormal, it’s not going to scare you. Whether or not I believe in it is immaterial – I think that our understanding of our own reality is stunted enough for me to never discount the possibility of alternate realities crossing over into our own. Regardless, I think this is the best horror series to be introduced in well over a decade, and I believe it deserves a lot of credit for that simply because it’s the first in many years to actually be about suspense – not just a body count.

These movies are deceptively effective because we’re made to wait and watch for stuff to happen.

That being said, will the new one hold up the current streak of great writing and truly scary atmosphere? Who knows. If the “Bloody Mary” scene from this trailer is actually the jumping off point for this prequel, I may have to storm into the projection booth and defecate on the reels. If it’s just a scene of little girls being little girls, then fine.

Paranormal Activity pointed out a sad truth that putting a camera on a tripod in 2009 was innovative again. Paranormal Activity 2 upped the ante with multiple cameras and better effects. We’ll see what part three has in store on October 21.

My Brides and I

You know you’re doing something right when you go to a wedding and see a lot of familiar faces. Faces that smile at you as they walk by, or better yet, come up with a special greeting and a big hug. This last week, at the wedding of Rhett and Paige Ashton, I had one of those days that tells me I’m doing something right. Not only were there familiar faces galore, but two former clients as well.

Emily and Brian Boos from June of last year. And Jenny and Joe Tonio from this past June. I took the time to catch up with them and heard some great stories. Emily apparently made Brian watch their wedding video every day for the first month after they got it. Jenny and Joe have been enjoying a similar viewing streak since their wedding. Both couples have been spreading the word far and wide about the wonders of a Lightcraft wedding because they all frigging rock!

Detroit A-List: Week 2

Lightcraft Entertainment continues to ride the waves of first place on the Detroit A-List, despite heavy competition from Complete Video Solutions, a company out of Macomb I don’t really know much about. Having seen their video work, I can say that it’s competent and well-done… but in my humble opinion, it’s nothing special. I believe any three person crew (which looks to be about their package design) can do what they do and turn out a similar product. It seems inconceivable to me that anyone would describe a working experience with such a busy crew as “non-obtrusive,” and isn’t that what you’d want on your wedding day? I would think so. Now you might say that a three person crew will catch more than any one man crew, which is true, but will any three person crew get this glowing review?

Maybe. But probably not.
